The Next Big Thing?

Exclusive: Movie Downloads on iTunes By Mid-September

My co-worker, friend and fellow tech-nerd Erik sent me this article today. I'm sure Wal-Mart and some others who make a lot of money selling DVDs are going to tell you that this is bad, very bad. It's just another step in the evolution of the way business is conducted.

Here's what I think is going to happen. Wal-Mart will start selling movie downloads. They are probably going to be $5 each. You may be able to get some sort of a discount if you buy the actual DVD at Wal-Mart. (Why would you want the DVD and the download? I don't know. Why do I have Star Wars on both DVD and VHS? I don't know...) The movie downloads will probably be movies only, I don't think you'll get the deleted scenes, features, etc. on downloads.

And one more thing...I think Apple will probably roll out a new video iPod to drive their movie download service. I think they'll be successful, but I still can't see people willing to pay $15 for a download when they can own the movie for $10. Of course I'm also the guy who believes the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series any year now....
